Dan Patlansky on his 9th Album – Perfection Kills

Dan Patlansky: Perfection Kills

Remember, as a kid, you used to love MTV and promised yourself you’d never turn into a VH1 person but then all the awesome bands that you watched on MTV started playing on VH1 while MTV started playing some incomprehensible stuff? That’s the gist of Patlansky’s new album. My personal rock collection spans over 400 CDs and generally I get through them in a year (I drive around a lot) but Perfection Kills has been spinning in my car for some 2 weeks now and still going.

Patlansky has managed to age like fine wine, that somehow naturally has the effects of Red Bull! I had a bunch of questions for Dan from his methodoly in songwriting to his inspirational aura!

Richard Chemaly: Shot on the new album Dan! Feels like the most energetic of your work yet! Particularly Dog Day has getting a lot of airplay in my car. Not certain how other motorists feel about my shouting along though. Can totally relate to scraping “shit off my shoe”. With intricate harmony between lyrics and instruments, I gotta ask, where do you start with a song?

Dan Patlansky (DP): I always start with an idea like chords progression or a riff. Then I’ll hum melodies over the top until I’m satisfied, only then do I write lyrics. But always music first. Just has always worked for me.

RC: You’ve now put out as many albums as the Offspring but you’ve barely been super active half as long. How have you managed to keep your stamina through the live gigs, travel, recording and increasing collection of underwear thrown onto stage?

DP: It’s sometimes tough balancing family life with one on the road. But it’s my passion so I find it s lot easier to push for more when I love something so much.

RC: We last spoke with you a couple of months back and you told us you keep coming back to South Africa because it’s such a wonderful space with wonderful fans. Turns out you’re heading off again? Where’s the guitar taking you and when will you be back to regale us back home?

DP: We are touring Germany and the UK to launch the album. Then we are certainly heading back to SA shore to launch the album here. Can’t wait to be playing new songs.

RC: Quick shift to your Clarens weekend guitar academy. Firstly a novel idea and seemingly gaining a lot of traction. You’ve done it a couple of times so have any guitarists come out of those weekends to do big things? What’re the greatest success stories that have come from a weekend away with Dan?

DP: Roan Ash is doing some great things these days and is a very talented guy both on guitar and vocally. My brother Jake is also doing great in his band Boxer, both have attended weekends in the past.

RC: I’m struggling to anticipate the singles to come out of the new album? Kinda hoping for Shake the Cage. I’m going to try get it through the playlisting committee to get it on my radio show anyway. How have you preferences the tracks on the album?

DP: I find it very hard to pick singles because I never think of an album in that way. I see it as a whole. So every time I think a particular song is a single I’m hopelessly wrong. Shake The Cage I think would make a cool single though.

RC: Finally, how’s Ol’ Red holding up after years of loving abuse and repair?

DP: Unfortunately that guitar is completely unplayable now so it’s been retired, very sad. But the great news is Jason Smith at the Fender Custom Shop is going to be master building me a new Strat with the exact same specs, weight, you name it. Very excited for that!

Rich quit his job, jumped on a train, currently pays rent to hold his stuff in Hillbrow and is actually the most non-attorney attorney around.
