Why You Should Take a Flamethrower to Your Boardroom

Business is not done in the Boardroom.

Business is done at the local beer festival, during and after the booze have been drunk, it’s done in the lift on your way to a roof top for a photo of the Johannesburg skyline, it’s done at the family braai, when you end up talking to that other other uncle with the multi-million rand realty company.

Business, new entrepreneurs will find, is as much about being in the right place at the right time, as it is hard work, putting yourself in a situation, where the “right place and the right time” happen more often.

My Mom, as much of a business women she is, always references: “You’ve gotta be in the right place at the right time“.

As much as I respect her view, I disagree, I can’t feel that my life and it’s success or failure is down to chance. I do find though, as many have said before more, the harder you work, the luckier you get.

To the New Entrepreneur:

My brief message to the entrepreneurs starting their businesses for the first time this year, be aware, that you’re not going have every opportunity knock at your door, but you will have many others, and they will knock hard.

It’s your job to be open to these opportunities.

Be Mr Yes, as Richard Branson sometimes says.

Say yes to as many opportunities as you can handle, and try and figure out how to make them work on the way down. (Not saying do something you don’t know or don’t like though).

It comes down to the means to build relationships, very rarely are relationships in business or in life sparked at the weekly power point presentation status meeting, they are sparked over coffee and omelets, they are fed over cocktails and socialising.

Just because you’re a hard working entrepreneur who puts roughly eighteen hours into their work, doesn’t mean you should cut out your social life if you can, that is after all where an entrepreneur gains their first initial customer insight, and, clients.

Work hard Entrepreneur, but don’t forget to have fun!
