Triple 9 (2016)

Triple 9 Movie

I had a chance to go and see the action heist gangster movie: Triple 9, opened at Ster Kinekor Cinema’s this past Friday 11 March in South Africa.

I really enjoy action movies! There is nothing better for me than a simple plot that I can easily understand, or know before the movie gets into it’s first five minutes. It’s nice just to see: fighting, explosions and a the dark decay of a troubled anti-hero.

Triple 9 is something like that too. It does try and be a bit more creative with it’s plot and characters, but keeps the typical style of an average action movie. It’s not a great movie, it’s not a great action movie, but it’s a fine movie that some how makes you care about it’s characters too late in the film and then well, ends.

Film Synopsis

SPOILERS! DAH!

Triple 9 is a action heist gangster movie. A bunch of corrupt cops from various backgrounds and positions in the force, plan and execute a heist. But, before they can be paid, their employers: the Russian Jewish Mafia, have one last job for them, to secure the Russian mob’s crime lord’s freedom. The only thing that can make this impossible job succeed, is a code triple nine: Officer Down.

How It Turned Out:

Sounds good! But, it’s not that great. Though the first five minutes into the movie is filled with all the excitement of the opening heist.

Norman Reedus plays the over looking heist man: Russel Welch, that coordinates the entire plan, but, then dies half way through, typical. The movie went from being something of a Ghost Recon styled classic heist film to a normal action film with archetypal one sided corrupt cop characters to carry the rest of the story.

The remaining thieves: Marcus Belmont (Anthony Mackie), Franco Rodriguez (Clifton Collins Jr.), Gabe Welch (Aaron Paul) and Michael Atwood (Chiwetel Ejiofor) are left to try and succeed in a complex and impossible heist for the Russians.

Though Michael, the leader, is the man with something to loose in this whole big game, his son, who’s mother Elana (Gal Gadot) is also the sister of the crime lords wife and de-facto leader: Irina Vlaslov (Kate Winslet), who will stop it nothing to free her husband.

To succeed, the crew would need to generate a code 999, which means all police in the vicinity will rush to the location of the 999. The crew pick newbie: Chris Allen (Casey Affleck), to be their mark. But things don’t always go according to plan. Adding a larger spanner to the works and the only threat to this entire plan: Sargent Detective, Jeffrey Allen (Woody Harrelson), Chris Allen’s Uncle. Harrelson, as always, plays his part brilliantly and is the saving grace for this entire movie and a bit of a dark comic relief.

Like any action movie, chaos, betrayal, greed, lots of sweat and some drug abuse goes into making a decent action movie. But, the overall pace of the film is rocky, and the lulls between the action sequences, even the finale, make you loose any kind of adrenaline you may have felt, the slow parts even give you enough time to figure out what’s going to happen next.

I don’t want to say the story is predictable, but besides two minor twists, everything became very obvious by the end.

Should you Watch it?

Sure, if there isn’t a superhero movie out, or a Star Wars film you’re saving money for, this is the action movie of the Summer season, so go check it out! But, don’t expect the depth of John Wick or the blasting of Die Hard.
